Where have the years gone? Time flies like a blur through the decades of younger life, the 20's 30's and 40's. Many of us are mothers, perhaps adjusting to a recent empty nest. Many of us are business owners or employees dedicating most waking hours to our professions. We are all daughters and some of us are caring for aging parents. We are wives, friends, volunteers, members of various communities and groups all while cooking dinner, cleaning the house, and keeping up with the laundry. Our lives are busy, no wonder the years seem to fly by.

But now, in our 50's and beyond, our bodies are changing. Menopausal symptoms are altering physical and mental systems that have been stable for years. Joints may begin to ache and weight is inching higher, especially around the middle. Our mental acuity is sometimes challenged and our mood is less predictable. Even more worrisome, we've been told we might have prediabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol.

If any of this sounds familiar, it's time to act! Around this sixth decade of life our nutrition behaviors and lifestyle habits need to be recalibrated for our new normal. And while we are at it, it's time for some self care, renewed energy, and greater joy and vitality.

I'm Lisa Hillmann, a registered dietitian and trained genetic counselor. My professional goals are to help women discover how to be "Fabulous After 50!": I support women with nutritional and lifestyle changes to support disease prevention, better mood, enhanced energy, and healthy longevity. I'm also a Masters-trained genetic counselor, and use the emerging science of nutrigenomics to personalize recommendations to help women reach their health goals.
